education
I have been tremendously fortunate to be surrounded by excellent Bachelor-, Master- and PhD- students. I was given the opportunity to graduate hundreds of undergraduates and more than 50 PhD graduates. Over the years I developed courses on topics ranging from high performance computing to complex system simulation, a privilege.
In 2012 I became 'distinguished professor' at the science faculty and I was freed up from teaching. Even though I am still ambivalent about the honor not to teach, I do very much appreciate the opportunity to focus mainly on research, be it in Amsterdam, St. Petersburg or Russia.
I do however still give many guest lectures/talks/presentations and I am actively involved in the International Master on Computational Science that the UvA was so kind to allow me to develop with great colleagues such as Jaap Kaandorp, Alfons Hoekstra, Rob Belleman, Drona Kandhai, Mike Lees and many others.
I also enjoy organizing and teaching every year a winter school on Complexity in Singapore at the complexity institute in NTU, which I co-direct with Steve Lansing.
